Ranking the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE Movies

Here’s my worst-to-best list for the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE films.

*SPOILER WARNING*

7) MI2 (2000) The action sequences are silly and Tom Cruise is downright annoying through most of it. Grade: D

6) MI3 (2006) Nothing special, but a reasonably good action movie. Grade: B

5) DEAD RECKONING PART 1 (2023) Lots of great action and an interesting premise, but loses points for killing off my favorite MI character. Grade: B+

4) MI (1996) The good old classic! Breaking into the FBI building and lowering from the ceiling is still one of the most iconic sequences from the franchise. Lots of suspense and intrigue from the mystery of who sabotaged the team. Grade: A

Really, I think of the next three as being tied for first place, but if I have to order them, here’s my take.

3) GHOST PROTOCOL (2011) A game changer that gave new life to the franchise. Putting Simon Pegg’s Benji into the field added some much needed comedy after the somewhat dreary MI3. And of course there’s that amazing Burj Khalifa sequence. Grade: A+

In most MI ranking lists I see, either the ‘96 original or GHOST PROTOCOL are placed at number one, so I know I’m straying from the norm here, but I have my reason, which is…

Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust. The team just isn’t complete without my favorite MI character.

Ilsa, Ethan, Luther, and Benji – these four are the best ingredients for a great MI story which is why I place the following at the top.

2) ROGUE NATION (2015) The action, comedy, and cast of characters – everything is running at full capacity on this one. And Solomon Lane reminds me a little of Cobra Commander, which is a bonus for someone like me who’s a huge G.I. Joe fan. Grade: A+

1) FALLOUT (2018) This one has all the strengths of ROGUE NATION, but also has my favorite MI baddie, Henry Cavill, added to the mix. Also, the action sequences and the way everything is filmed is a step up from anything in the franchise. The halo jump, the fight in the club bathroom, the helicopter sequence at the end – everything is jump-in-your-seat amazing. Grade: A+

That’s my take. How do you rank them?
